Sizes of Rugs - How to Measure
Use these helpful tips to measure and choose the perfect size rug for your room.

  • • Consider the shape of the room and the pieces of furniture populating it.

  • • Measure the area you want the rug to cover. Keep in mind that you will ideally want to have a border of floor around the room exterior. (A general rule of thumb is to select an area rug that is 2-3’ shorter than the shortest wall of the room.)

  • • For hallway rugs and runners, leave at least 6” of floor exposed on all sides.

  • • If the rug will be in the entryway, open your front door all the way and leave some space between the rug and the edge of the door.

  • • When choosing an area rug for your dining room, make sure it is large enough to cover the area under your table and chairs, with the chairs pushed all the way back from the table. The chair legs should still be on the rug when the chair is pushed back.

  • • For living rooms, there is no comprehensive rule of thumb, so you can rely on your personal preference. We suggest that you keep the coffee table as the focal point. From there you decide whether you would like all of the surrounding furniture on the rug, some of or none of it.  Any of those choices are perfectly acceptable.

  • • You also have great options for choosing a bedroom rug.  Some choose rugs large enough for the bed, nightstands and plenty of room to walk around the bed.  Another option is to put smaller rugs just under nightstands.  You may also consider running an area rug just under the bottom half of the bed with room to walk around the bottom edges of the bed.

  • • Rugs for the kitchen are very easy to shop for and are usually narrowed down to small area rugs and runners, depending on the kitchen style.

Here are the common rug sizes you’ll find:

  • • 12’ x 15’
  • • 10’ x 14’
  • • 9’ x 12’
  • • 8’ x 10’
  • • 6’ x 9’
  • • 5’ x 8’
  • • 4’ x 6’
  • • 3’ x 5’

Country Braided Rugs

Rug Styles & Types
Choose a rug design or general style that fits your own home décor and taste. Here are some characteristics of each style, so you can identify the one that fits you best.

Traditional

Traditional designs feature the elaborate medallion, flower and vine patterns that most associate with the costly Oriental rugs of the past. Today's pieces are much more affordable and usually available in rectangular, octagon and oval shapes. Try a traditional rug if you like a more formal look.

Contemporary

Bold colors, geometric shapes, and an overall modern look and feel define the contemporary rug style. Ironically, contemporary styling can also be very retro, paying homage to the art deco and Bauhaus styles that were popular in the 1920s and 1930s. If you love bold colors and lines, this is the choice for you.

Transitional

To be more versatile and less formal, transitional styles blend both traditional and contemporary elements. The result? More unique and beautiful styles that are suitable for many different décors.

Country & Braided

For a cozy, cabin-esque feel, the country braided rug is a great option. Braid rugs are cafted out of rugged, durable fibers and simply styled to add old-fashioned charm to your rug décor. Ideal for kitchens and bathrooms, braided rugs usually come in a variety of shapes including oval, round, and rectangle. If you love cozy, country or early-American styles décor, this is your best choice.

Shag

Shag rugs are known for their plush, fluffy texture and nostalgic look and feel. Plus, shag area rugs are made of durable fibers and tend to last for years. No wonder they were so popular in the 60s and 70s - and still a great choice today for your casual décor.

Room-Specific

Classic bathroom rug sets  come in a variety of colors to suit any décor and plenty of sizes you need for practical comfort and use. For your kitchen, choose comfort mats, braided rugs or browse our selection of Mohawk kitchen rugs.

Novelty Rugs

Add a touch of whimsy or fun to your room with a fun shaped or themed rug. These novelty rugs are usually less expensive, but pack a decorating punch.

Rug Materials & Fibers
When looking for a new area rug, be sure to consider how much you'll be walking on it.
You'll want to choose materials and fibers that will be practical for the amount of wear and tear the rug will get.

Wool

Strong and durable yet thick and soft, wool is one of the most common, widely used natural materials for area rugs. This rug fiber is great for repelling stains and easy to clean. For this reason, it is perfect for living rooms, dining rooms, and other high-foot traffic areas.

Indoor/Outdoor Rugs

Silk

Typically used for Oriental rugs, this luxurious fiber is also often blended with other rub materials to produce softness and sheen. Silk fiber refracts light in a way that gives off a distinctive shimmering appearance. These area rugs are ideal for bedrooms and other low-foot traffic areas.

Indoor/Outdoor Rugs

Cotton

Another widely-used natural material, cotton is mostly used to make durable, flat-woven area rugs. Cotton is also more affordable than silk or wool and is thus, commonly found throughout homes in kitchens, casual spaces, and high-foot traffic areas. While more susceptible to wear and tear than wool rugs, cotton area rugs are more easily washed and affordable to replace, so you can update your look more often.

Floral Border Rug

Natural grasses (jute, sisal, coir, sea grass)

These versatile fibers and materials match well with various décor styles. These fibers are usually flat-woven for long-lasting strength and durability, but tend to sacrifice softness and the ability to clean effectively in result. They're great for welcome mats and outdoor areas.

Rug Set

Synthetic fibers (nylon, polyester, acrylic, olefin)

Often used to recreate the characteristics of natural fibers, these materials are used to make inexpensive area rugs. Generally available in many colors, there are many different synthetic fibers to choose from. Unfortunately, while more affordable and abundant, these area rugs tend to wear and fade faster than natural fibers. These are great to choose if you like to update your look often.

Rug Shapes
With so many different shapes available, you’ll find the perfect rug to complement your space.

Rectangle

This is most popular and versatile rug shape and can be used effectively in most kinds of rooms. Rectangular area rugs are also available in a vast assortment of sizes, from door mats to living room rugs.

Round

Often found in entryways and underneath dining room tables to soften the space, round area rugs are a unique alternative to the more common rectangle area rugs. Round rugs are ideal complements to traditional, formal styles of home décor. This rug shape is also incredibly versatile and can work in most spaces.

Square

Perfect for rooms lacking warmth, square area rugs can add color and liveliness to most room types. Naturally, a square room caters well to a square area rug as an addition.

Runner

Typically used for hallways, staircases, and long spaces, these decorative area rugs are distinctively long and narrow. Available in all of the common rug styles, colors, and patterns, runners can be placed in any high-traffic areas of your home.

Oval

Often seen in both traditional and contemporary styles, oval area rugs are versatile and can be used in a number of ways to decorate and accentuate your home. These rugs are naturally softer in shape than square and rectangle area rugs and can complement round furniture perfectly.

Octagon

Traditional-style rugs tend to use this unique shape as the focal point in entryways and underneath round dining tables. Rarer than most other rug shapes, octagon area rugs will liven up your home décor in an original way.

Half-Circle

This shape is most commonly used for small door mats. It's also a great shape for hearths and kitchens.
